Fast Facts about the ISS

  • The first module of the International Space Station (ISS) was launched into space on November 20, 1998.
     

  • This first module was a Russian module called Zarya, which means dawn.
     

  • The ISS now has sixteen pressurized modules. These include five Russian modules, eight U.S. modules, two Japanese modules, and one European module.
     

  • It travels at around 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour).
     

  • It completes an obit of the earth about every ninety minutes.
     

  • It’s average distance from the earth is about 240 miles (400 kilometers).
     

  • It has been continuously occupied since November of 2000.
     

  • Astronauts have grown vegetables such as red romaine lettuce in the ISS. They ate some of it too.
